An End and a Beginning

Hey there Geeks and Geekettes,
I have no idea how to start this... TheX has ended. It's over guys, TheX is no more. There's fifteen million reasons I can give you but, I'll spare the explanations. TheX was an awesome podcast with a year long run. It was a ton of fun and very enjoyable.

I've felt for awhile that things need to take a new direction. I know many of you have seen the struggle it's become to put out a good show lately. I figured it out. Things have changed. My life has changed, work has changed and my hobbies of gaming aren't as intense as they used to be. My interests span the "geek universe" and, I have interests outside of that as well.

Yes, TheX itself has ended. However, something new is on the horizon. *Spark* will be coming in the month of April which is a brand new show that is going to be very different. Very different? No, insanely different. *Spark* was inspired by people that I meet on a regular basis. What is it? That, you will have to find out when it comes in April.

I *do* want to give a large thank you to all of the audience of TheX. You guys are beyond awesome. Without you, TheX would never have been anything. You made it what it is and, you made it possible. To you, I owe a huge thanks. I also feel the following people deserve a large "thank you" for what they have done for TheX and their help along the way; Rob and Dan of RnD podcast , The Geek Media , Kam Uraki, Oxhorn , Steve Racer, Clint Hackleman, Illyrian, Drewbie and Macheath of "The Grind", Octale and Hordak of Octale and Hordak vs the World, Everyone at TheX's former "home" on the internet - WoW Radio, Bob Chapin, Nathan Pinard, My brother- Wierdo, my Mother , my Grandmother , Moiren, Jaithas, Mifio, Metaldragon, David Silver of Festival of Blood Radio, Leala and Haley of Epic Dolls.

I want to give a long, drawn out speech and thank fifteen thousand people for TheX. However, I don't feel that I need to do that. TheX as a show has ended but, something new has come along. Whether you move over and give *Spark* a chance or, whether you move on to other places on the world wide web, thank you for hanging out with me this year and being a part of TheX.

The Flu and Games

There is an awful flu going around Middle Tennessee (and half of the country). I was one of the fortunate people who caught it. I've been down for a week with fever, cold symptoms and fatigue. It hasn't been very fun at all.

Thankfully, I had some company during this period. Video games. World of Warcraft was my friend, keeping me from being insanely bored while I was laying in bed with a fever. I would fire up the laptop and play a little bit until I felt like sleeping again. After awhile, WoW got boring. Four days in a row is about all I can handle of tons of WoW time...even though my Shaman is reaping the benefits of some power leveling.

Once WoW got boring, the Nintendo DS took it's place. I still haven't managed to beat Phantom Hourglass plus, Matt has been cracking away at the game himself.I put down the portable games, wishing I could play the Wii but, getting up and bouncing with the Wii-mote is not a good idea when you are sick.

So, I slept even more the last couple days of the flu trying to find something that would keep me occupied while I was sick. Books help. I did realize I am in need of some new books to read. I've read what I have. Television? It's always so touch and go. There's so many times I can check on-demand before I realize nothing is ever on television. Podcasts? They keep me entertained for a time as well.

All in all, by day five of this I was going stir-crazy. Video games became something I would rather not do. Books were making my head hurt and, if I had to hear Leto scream on RnD one more time, I might scream myself. Can this be? Could Menuet actually be bored with anything geeky? Yes! Yes, she can!

I longed for something to do. I needed to get out of the house. I had to at least go run an errand, go to belly dancing class. At that point, running in circles in the driveway sounded very inviting. Finally, I woke up yesterday feeling better. I didn't want to push it though...I took my time, rested and slept well last night. This morning, I barely had a sniffle when I woke up. Oh, it feels so good to feel better!

Though video games and uber geeky-ness is tons of fun. It's no replacement for activity and life in general. Though anyone can use the immersive fantasy of games and books as an escape, there's a point where even that is no "mental vacation". I still love my games, books and geeky goodness. Now, if you will all excue me I am about to go run circles in the driveway.

Inventing Swear Words 4 is out!

Alright everyone, the wedding of the century is now out and ready to be viewed. http://www.wegame.com has Inventing Swear Words 4 . It will soon be seen on Oxhorn's site http://www.brandonmdennis.com

You have to watch this! It's wonderful. The musical numbers and the appearance of so many characters in the different Oxhorn movies. See how many you can find as you watch it!

If you can't figure me out, I played the "Elf Floosie" (as in the credits *laughs*) and the bloopers are awesome. As usual, Oxhorn took my recording and managed to allow me to embarrass myself once again. I was actually dealing with a very full house that night and had to warn people when I was about to be loud. ...Of course, screaming through the house never helps much with that, does it?

I'm sure many of you heard about the shooting at Northern Illinois University this week. That is where I graduated from, and I still know many of the people on campus. Unfortunately, someone I tutored while in my senior year there was injured in the shooting, but is stable in the hospital. I'm asking everyone here if they can say a quick prayer for the dead and the survivors of the horror my Alma Mater has had to endure. It would mean a lot to me, and the thousands of others who are affected by this like me.

Hiatus and whatnot

As any of you who follow "TheX" may know, we're on a short hiatus. Real life crits us for over 9000 and, we need to get some things figured out. Matt is settling in to Tennessee, I'm working and trying to push for extra hours, Noct is working nights..it's getting pretty crazy. Scheduling shows is getting difficult. So, we're taking a couple of weeks off to do some re-vamping and we shall be back! A bit different but, I promise TheX with Matt, Menuet and Noct will remain that.

As far as myself..Chronicle of the Annoying Quest faced a production delay due to illness of some cast members. As soon as they get better, we will be finishing things up. Kam is also working on a possible new PSA for Chronicle and, there's going to be some serious Draenei love coming to CotAQ (hint; "I DID NOT CRASH SHIP!"..I will say (nor write) anything more).

Inventing Swear Words 4 is due out any day . Yes, I did some work in it. I really can not wait to see it. I know what's going to be in it and, I will tell you this...there were certain points when I did my lines where I laughed so hard, I could not continue. It is going to be one of the funniest Oxhorn has put out.

There's some more machinima love in the works over at The Geek Media. Rob (or some of you know him as MacHarborGuy) has tried his hand at machinima making. He has some great scripts and ideas that will be including a lot of TGM members. I do know for a fact Vlada the Draenei will be showing up in one of them.

A delay?

Yes folks, TheX has been delayed. A lot of real life stuff going on. So..onto excuses and something for you to do.

Menuet's excuses: My Mother was very sick (she's better now- thank God). I got sickly myself for a couple of days. I had to do voice recording for Chronicle of the Annoying Quest *and* for Oxhorn (yes, Inventing Swear Words 4!). Work got busy.

Matt's excuses: He's moving to Tennessee from Alaska. 'Nuff said.

Noct's excuses: Noct's co-worker got put in the hospital and, he covered their shift. Well, the other person who was supposed to help cover got into a car accident. Noct worked doubles. He's pooped.

This is where we all shout hooray for being an adult! Don't worry. You *will* have an X this week. You will also hear More Than Machinima with The Bragerminor this coming weekend. And, next week..TheX as scheduled.

Epic Dolls WoW "Girls Night out"

Leala and Haeley at Epic Dolls podcast had Menuet and Kristen from WoW chronicles join them for a "Girls Night Out" show that wrapped up a year of The Burning Crusade. Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas everyone! The Holidays have taken their toll and real life has once again gotten in the way. Hey, it's that time of year. Drewbie and I tried multiple times to get together for TheX but it just wasn't working out. Finally, we sat down and recorded about Fifteen minutes then...my internet went down. Unbelievable! Drewbie and I luckily laughed over it but, this caused a huge issue with scheduling so close to Christmas. Looks like that show will need to be rescheduled.

There will indeed be one more TheX released before you all are introduced to Matt and Noct as co-hosts. They will be joining me as permanent placements on TheX at the top of 2008. I know you all already loved it and you are going to love it even more with these two around!

TheX #37 : An Apology to you

The most recent show of TheX with Kam Uraki has caused some backlash from the audience. Many of you are fans of different machinima artists including The Grind, Myndflame, Stone Falcon and Oxhorn. TheX always tries to remain as neutral as possible with the machinima community. I have always supported machinima artists to the best of my ability. Each of the artists have their strengths, weaknesses, and individual talent that they bring into their machinima.

Many of you have made comments about the recent show. Please keep in mind those comments were the opinion of my co-host and did not reflect my opinions. My opinions on different artists is obviously a very neutral place considering I have supported many different artists on the show and contributed to many different machinimas as well.

The machinima artists I have met and gotten to work with in the machinima community are all deserving of credit. Each of them have wonderful shows that they release and each of them have their own way of doing things. The artists themselves have not commented on the show. I recently spoke to one machinima artist who was mentioned on the show. I am happy to say that none of them seem to have taken issue with the comments made.

I do understand that you (as the audience) are fans of respective machinima artists. I also understand you felt the need to defend certain artists and certain machinima. I am very glad to see that so many different fandoms have come into the "crew" of TheX and I would hate to see any division caused because of this. To all of you who have expressed comments on the show, I do apologize and I assure you this will not happen again.

Announcement about TheX

TheX will be late/not air this week. There are some rl things getting in the way and it's going to be very difficult to get a show out. Hopefully, I will get one out this week.

Also. TheX is looking for a permanent co-host. As you all know I've had the rotating co-hosts every two weeks. I'd like to see someone fill that "void" on a permanent basis. You don't have to have major experience but you do need to know a couple of things about podcasting. The rest, we can teach you easy.

What you will need:
A good microphone
Audacity / WavePad or other recording software
Skype
The ability to commit to doing a show every other week (save emergencies etc)
The ability to mesh and work well with another host
Knowledge of gaming, geekery and other things that may be geeky.

Please understand this is something that you need to be serious about doing and comitted to. Send a demo in the form of an MP3 to TheXShow@gmail.com . We'll be doing trial shows over the next few weeks to figure out which co-host is the best candidate.

Listeners will not be eligible to vote on a co host but I do value your feedback. As you hear the shows please e-mail me and let me know which co-host you like best.

Change is good

I find it funny that even in the "new media" people can still seem to have their "fifteen minutes" of fame and then essentially disappear into the world wide web. However, sometimes it's not that simple. What they did to bring them to the forefront of one community stopped but, they came to the forefront of another community later on. It just seems that in this large world of the internet, people can be so closed in, thinking of only their own communities and not realizing there are massive amounts of others out there. It is hard to wrap your head around, I will admit.

One specific person I am talking about is my friend Cranius. Anyone who is a fan of World of Warcraft machinima will remember the song "Big Blue Dress" that seemed to sweep the WoW community back in 2005. After awhile, Cranius seemed to just disappear. Not too many people heard from him ever again. They just didn't know where to look.

Cranius is still very much "alive" as it were. He has a website http://www.cranius.com where he writes interesting commentary and news on different video games that come out. He has also written some very good pieces on machinima and the community as a whole. He has made a couple of more videos, one of them showing off the use of model viewer. He also has some links to the other machinima artists out there showing his support for the community.

Still, so many people wonder where he's gone. He hasn't gone anywhere. He has just taken a new approach to what he is doing. It almost seems like he dropped a bit behind the scenes, letting life itself take priority. His blog has taken a turn towards gaming in general but still includes the machinima community. He has a guild in World of Warcraft and has gotten some very high PVP ranks on his server.

Yeah, the guy hasn't made another "Big Blue Dress" but he certainly is doing something very good. I just find it amusing that Cranius isn't the only one people think this about. They are "known" for one project or one specific thing they have done. If they don't deliver the same thing over again people forget about them. They may just want to try something new. The beauty of the internet is it allows you to try something new without worry.

I've had a similar thing happen to me. So many people still want to hear me time and time again "do the Draenei impression". Yes, I still do it for kicks and I enjoy it still. Many others want me to talk about World of Warcraft all the time like I used to. I think what some people don't understand is World of Warcraft isn't my only interest. I have many interests and many games I enjoy playing. WoW is one of them.

Yes, I used to have TheX on a World of Warcraft station so, it was much more WoW-oriented. But, as I began to talk about WoW less and less, I began to belong there less and less. Once I pretty much quit playing the game all together, the show didn't belong there anymore. I had gone from a very heavy World of Warcraft show to general gaming and general geek talk. So, I moved on to a new network and the show now has a panel of rotating guest hosts.

I am enjoying every minute of this. I couldn't be happier with TheX and the new interaction I get every couple of weeks with new guest hosts. I love the vast array of topics I get to talk about and, never quite knowing how my guest host and I will interact. Still, I get so many people e-mail me saying "I wondered where you went. I thought you stopped doing your show. Why don't you talk about WoW anymore? Why don't you talk about _ anymore? Why don't you do this like you did with Alris or Speedy?" For the record, Alris and Speedyf40 were both the hosts of a show I co-hosted called User Interface.

Where did I go? Nowhere, I just moved elsewhere and changed it up a bit. Why don't I talk about WoW anymore? Because I have so many other interests and topics that are more/just as interesting. Why don't I talk about _ anymore? The same reason as just mentioned. Doing a regular segment with a regular host is one thing. That's why it worked with Alris and Speedy. I don't do that now because the guests hosts rotate and, part of the fun is we are always up in arms on topics. We just talk about common interests and go from there.

I enjoyed doing User Interface very much. It taught me a lot and, Alris and Speedy were both awesome hosts. I also enjoy doing TheX very much as well and, I enjoy where it's gone. I've gained a lot of new listeners who tell me how much they enjoy the show and, I love hearing from old friends who have found me again. Just remember, if you are one of those old friends that things do change and people can change around a little bit. Normally, this change is for the better.

This is one of the worst displays of exploitation I have ever seen. There is a contest being held for "Kane & Lynch" which is beyond ridiculous. Not to mention the rules of the contest (where a female on the front page is topless) states that no skill of playing the game is needed. Oh yes, did we mention it's sponsored by Myspace and Playboy? Enough said.

Seriously, this is one of the neatest things I have ever seen. I love it when geekdoms cross over. Food geeks and gaming geeks have united to make this beautiful thing. I just hope it tastes as good as it looks.

While I'm on my Wii kick for the day, check out the video of Sonic in action for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. He's putting Samus in morph ball to shame with this. Wow. Super Smash Bros. Brawl is going to be amazing. So glad I pre-ordered mine.

Now that we are anticipating this game even more, let me ask you all this...how much do you think Nintendo had to give Sega to pick up Sonic for this game? I'm just curious what the fine print on that deal looked like.

We all know that I have a little obsession with mermaids. I love them. I even have some sculptures in my room and yes, I even enjoy the Disney movie. So, when someone told me about a video of a "mermaid girl" I was expecting to see something similar to a woman I saw in South Florida. She's a performer who would swim around in a mermaid costume, come up for air and play the part. I was quite amazed at this video I saw. This is definitely nothing like I thought.

It's a rare congenital defect that fuses a person's legs together More information called "Mermaid Syndrome". Normally, people born with this defect don't live long because of so many internal problems they are also born with. The video of the little girl was a heartwarming story. Once I found the story on Digg, I thought I would like to share it as well.

Social Media can be a bit annoying sometimes. We'll see the same stories over and over again or, awful pieces that are opinions being passed off as fact. This time, social media gave us a nice story with some hope.

Alarm Clocks for the Nerdy Kind

Let's face it. We're geeks. We stay up late playing video games, surfing the internet, coding, or gaming. Friday and Saturday nights are normally the days for us to stay up until we see those rays of sun peeking out. Sunday nights are a no-go because Monday brings the work day. Unless...you are one of those people like me who have the worst time waking up.

For those of us who are not morning people, there are two alarm clocks that I will dub "the geek alarm clocks". These clocks will get you moving in the mornings, either through sheer frustration or, variety.

The first clock on the table is one that I think is wonderful. I am one of the people who have to change my clock every couple of months. Why? Because I get used to the alarm and, don't hear it anymore. I'll sleep right through it until my brother stumbles into my room, smacks the clock, says something I don't understand and goes back to bed. Thinkgeek.com has done away with my need for a new clock every so often thanks to the "Never late 7 day alarm clock".

The "never late" has seven different alarms for all seven days of the week. It's a high-tech alarm clock that only thinkgeek.com would offer. The clock has a very easy system to set each different alarm using a rotating button on the top. It also allows you to choose your snooze time; 1 minute or 20 minutes. What else makes this clock awesome? A "nap" feature. If you need a nap, the never late will wake you up. With a few turns of a dial and, a few touches of a button you will be awaken every day with a new alarm and, you can even have a power nap if you need it.

Our second clock is not for the faint of heart. It is also not for grumpy morning people. If you have a good sense of humor, "Clocky" is for you! Clocky is a great name for an alarm clock that may become your next conversation piece. This clock runs away from you after the first snooze.

You set "Clocky" for a 0 - 9 minute snooze. After you hit the first snooze button, "Clocky" waits the alloted time. The second time he goes off, he is off! Clocky rolls off of your desk or nightstand and onto the floor, moving along while he blares an alarm to wake you up. There's no reaching over and turning the snooze on again. You have to get out of bed and chase "Clocky" down to get him to be quiet. By that time, you are awake and probably slightly annoyed. However, it's worth it because at least you woke up on time. You might hate "Clocky" at first but, eventually you will thank it for not only waking you up but, forcing a morning exercise routine as well.

Sometimes, a person can have the funniest conversation with someone else. Or, an argument can be really amusing when you think back on it. The other evening was one of those conversations.

I was playing Metroid Prime 3. There is a pretty difficult boss and, looking on the internet I found out I am not the only one who felt like throwing the Wii-mote at the screen. My brother (Weirdo) walks into the living room and watches me for a minute. Finally, he says "What are you trying to do?"

"I have to rip that off and then pelt him in hypermode. Then, go for it again..ahh!" I shouted because he hit me again. I shook my head "He keeps getting me. I'm going to die again."

Weirdo sat down on the couch to watch this and finally gave his advice "Strafe."

"I am. See there?" I pointed to the screen where I began to strafe right before getting smacked down.

"No you were barely moving." he replied.

"Well, I can't much move when that happens." I huffed, trying desperately not to let poor Samus die "oh man..phazon overloaded. I'm down." sure enough, Samus screams and the "game over" screen comes up. I opted to continue,"O.K. let's try this again."

Weirdo leaned back, clearly amused "Now strafe." I did and..bam! He chuckled "The other way....now that way. You aren't moving." he looked at me, smug little bugger.

"Do you see this here?" I motioned to the nunchuck and moved it around "I am strafing. He keeps hitting me." I was getting aggravated with my dear brother who thought he could do this so much better.

He shrugged "I'm telling you, you aren't moving."

"I am." my voice got a little thin at that point. I hate it when I can't beat a boss after at least two tries. Darn Nintendo for giving me a game with a challenge. Of course, I got smacked down again. Poor Samus was having a bad night.

Weirdo laughed at me, and shook his head "You aren't strafing."

I pushed the Wii-mote in his face "You wanna try?"

He grinned and took the controls "Sure." He was so smug. Oh yeah, he could beat this.

So, he began the boss fight for the fourth time (I tried three). He strafed right, strafed left and then..smack! He got hit. He pursed his lips. I didn't say a word but, I wanted to. Ohhh! I wanted to. I encouraged him at one point "There! You got him. Hit him!" success! We actually did damage. Hmmm, could Weirdo beat this boss? If he did, I might throw him instead of the Wii-mote.

He did the same thing again but, he got smacked down. Weirdo frowned. He was getting worn down. After a few more of these instances, he grumbled something I may not want to repeat. "Can't you strafe?" I had to ask. Just a jab but, we're siblings after all.

He nodded, admitting I was right. He kept trying though. Another issue was me going into Hypermode. I shouldn't have done that, you know? So, Weirdo decided to get this boss with no Hypermode. Finally he sighed and said "I need to hit hypermode here and hit him."

I nodded "Yeap." I wouldn't rub it in. I knew what he was thinking.

After a few minutes of the same issue I was having,Weirdo also lost the fight. He sighed and shrugged, handing me the controls back. I looked at him "Don't you want to try again."

He grumbled a very gruff "No. I don't like the controls for this game." and walked away.

Or maybe...just maybe he can't admit his sister may have been right.

Tell Me the Story

I was taking a break from work and, went to check on Digg. My brother showed me an amusing story he had uncovered. I began to sort through some of the upcoming stories and, found this gem .

Then, I found one of the most beautiful pictures of Link and Zelda I have ever seen. Look at this! I can't figure out if it is available for buying a print. I hope it is. With the art I have now, this picture would just finish the wall completely.

Remote Fight? Not Even Close.

For most people, telling them about the amazing set up in my media room spawns jealous thoughts. I can see faces turn green anytime I mention it on air. You can imagine how proud I am when I look at the 61" HDTV with surround sound system, DVD player, AM/FM stereo, and two gaming consoles.

Any woman who has been or is married could understand when I talk about the remote fight. It's a silent battle you engage in with your significant other. Eventually, one of you gains control of the channels for the evening. This is not a fight I go thru.

Unfortunately, my fight is much worse. I do have an adult male living with me, he is my brother. When you live with a roommate or a husband/wife things are different. When it's a sibling, that innate need to share with your sibling is so ingrained in your head that you both try to be nice to each other. This is a side lesson, what your parents teach you and your siblings will stick with you for the rest of your life. Of course, when you fight with your siblings it's just as bad as when you were kids. The only difference is, there's no hair pulling and telling Mom this time. It's a quiet, sneaky adult way of sibling rivalry...on a much smaller scale.

One thing my brother does that I can not stand is watch the news. He is glued to CNBC, MSNBC, and Fox News. If something is on a news channel he won't like, another news channel comes on.What makes it worse is, he takes the stories and starts a discussion on the state of the country or worse, a political debate. He and I rarely agree on political opinions and, having a debate with my brother is always fruitless. Both of us are so stubborn, we never win.

Still, I am very kind to him over the addiction to the news channels. I will let him watch the news while I work or do other things. However, when it's evening I would like to take over for a little bit. This is where the trouble comes. Taking over in my mind means using that gorgeous set up to watch a DVD or play the Wii. The speakers beg to have loud sound effects and soundtracks echo thru the house. The news will never give you that satisfaction.

Unfortunately, my brother disagrees with this. So, when the media room is occupied we'll come in and out multiple times, hoping we'll find the room vacant so we can take over. Sometimes, we pray that the other will be nice and walk in the room pointing to the remote and ask "Are you watching anything?".

Once in awhile, we get lucky and the remote is handed over. Eventually someone does give up the remotes (there's three to control everything) and go do something else. If he gives up, he retreats to his room to watch anime or play a PC game. If I give up, I'm off listening to various music, working out or playing a PC game.

There are those wonderful days where he is in a geeky mood and, the two of us can agree on the set up. It normally consists of him playing a game on the Wii that I bought months ago. He finally gets curious and plays it. I'll sit there, coaching him thru the game until we both can't figure out an area. Then, I grab my laptop and read the walk-thru I found on the internet.

My brother is what I like to call a "closet geek". He doesn't readily admit he likes games but, when no one else is around he'll indulge. I figure that one day soon, he'll be completely converted over and will proudly admit his inner gamer exists.

I suppose it isn't a remote fight at all, it's my own personal issue with my brother. If an issue is for a good cause, there's nothing wrong in forcing it...right? With that logic, I'll continue to silently battle my brother for the television. Even if the only satisfaction I will get out of it is to never hear Bill O'Reilly on those beautiful speakers again. A commentator does those speakers no justice. A video game, though? It's music to my ears.

I am one of those people that would cause a person in network market research to lose their hair. Reality TV shows are the worst form of entertainment I've ever seen. Celebrity gossip is ridiculous. I could not even tell you why that stupid boy made a video crying over Britney Spears. However, I could tell you his name and what shows he appeared on.

The internet as it is today has greatly changed the view of what entertainment is.We have been taken back to another time where television didn't exist.We are seeing a future of media that is completely self-published and produced. Anyone in the United States can blog their opinion or, place a video on You Tube. If they do it well enough they will be plastered all over the mainstream media.

Suddenly, it's "cool" to be a geek. Not two years ago, people would poke fun at you for being online often and making friends through certain social networks. If you listened to podcasts, you were a "dork", "nerd" or "geek". Heaven forbid you actually knew the mechanics of a role playing game. If you admitted it, you committed social suicide.

Today, you can walk into Starbucks and place an order. While you are waiting, you are on the phone with someone. Two Sixteen year olds overhear key names; "Leo Laporte", "Kevin Rose" and then they hear "Patrick Norton left?!". That would be enough for them to spark a conversation, begging to find out what Patrick Norton had done.

Then, you find yourself sitting down with two people who are ten years your junior discussing the latest episode of TWiT. Or, wonder why John Dvorak is so cranky. You excitedly explain that Patrick Norton left DLTV and speculate that Tech TV will make a return in the form of Revision 3. No one throws you a second glance when one of the teenagers whips out a Nintendo DS and, uses the browser to see if Patrick Norton was confirmed at Revision 3 yet.

These people have become our celebrities. This subculture that is beginning to spider it's way into the mainstream media has already set up their own public figures. Thank God, our celebrities have something decent to say.

I have yet to hear the juciest gossip over Scott Johnson's latest scandal.Because, there isn't one. I doubt we will ever be in an uproar because one of our precious figures got arrested for a DUI. Why? Because we don't care.

We don't want gossip or scandal or who slept with whom and got pregnant.We want information and, we want it presented to us in an entertaining way. We love talk that stimulates our brains, teaches us and allows us to embrace ourselves and our geeky personalities. We crave intellectual conversation and add just a bit of silly to balance it all out.

Think about this for a moment. You know it is true. Which brings me full circle to "it's cool to be a geek". The mainstream media is beginning to take notice of this subculture. People who made fun of computer "nerds" are suddenly becoming one. Podcasts, social networks, websites, blogging and news networks are becoming their daily dose of entertainment.

If this trend continues, ridiculous stories of the latest "it" girl in Hollywood could become a thing of the past. Those people could be forgotten and instead the latest celebrity story will be who is walking down the red carpet at E3.

We wish. It's a nice dream, isn't it? If it really happened, I might think of watching television again.

The community at large loses a wonderful author...

If any of you are fans of fantasy, books or even role-playing games you will know the name Robert Jordan. Sadly, Robert Jordan passed away recently. He lost a battle to a rare blood disease and went to be with The Lord.

I could write a long-winded post on this subject but, what can I say? Thank you, Robert Jordan for everything you contributed while here on earth. You will be missed.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Author Robert Jordan, whose "Wheel of Time" series of fantasy novels sold millions of copies, has died of a rare blood disease, his aide said Monday. He was 58.

Jordan, whose real name was James Oliver Rigney Jr., died Sunday at the Medical University of South Carolina of complications from primary amyloidosis with cardiomyopathy, his personal assistant, Maria Simons, said. The disease attacks the body's major organs; in Jordan's case, it caused the walls of his heart to thicken.

He wrote a trilogy of historical novels set in Charleston under the pen name Reagan O'Neal in the early 1980s. Then he turned his attention to fantasy and the first volume in his Wheel of Time epic, "The Eye of the World," was published in 1990 under the name Robert Jordan.

Jordan's books tells of Rand al'Thor, who is destined to become the champion who will battle ultimate evil in a mythical land.

Book 11, "Knife of Dreams," came out in 2005; there was also a prequel, "New Spring: The Novel," in 2004. The other titles in the series include "The Great Hunt," "Lord of Chaos" and "The Path of Daggers." Jordan was working on a 12th volume at the time of his death, Simons said.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet McDougal Rigney.

Sony fails to impress...again.

Sony has disappointed me. I was highly anticipating the game Heavenly Sword. The graphics and motion-capture animation was enough to make me keep a shred of hope that Sony would have their moment. In the latest console wars between the Wii, Xbox360 and Playstation3 ; Sony has come out on the bottom so far. Heavenly Sword was a game that promised to bring Sony to the forefront of the console wars, giving them a bit of a boost in the competition.

Unfortunately, Heavenly Sword did not deliver. Popular online comics like Penny Arcade have already pronounced the fate of Heavenly Sword. The official review from Game Spot reads; "Heavenly Sword feels like a summer action flick. It's full of nonstop action, and it looks terrific. Unfortunately, it's over far too quickly." Another review according to Euro Gamer states; "It really did have the potential to be the PS3's first must-have title - yet, somewhere along the line it doesn't quite deliver. For PS3 owners, the wait for the killer-app goes on."

Most every review echoes the same thing. Beautiful graphics and art. Wonderful scenery. Horrible game play and a game that ends way too fast. We're all aware that I am a huge fan of Nintendo. The Wii is my console of choice and, Nintendo consoles have always taken first place with me. But, I don't turn a deaf ear to the other two big wigs on the scene. I am still a faithful player of the Playstation2 and, I still look at the poor Xbox that has since broken due to way too much Halo and Fable playing. So, don't think that my take on this game has anything to do with the obvious Nintendo fandom.

I was really hoping Sony would finally give us a game worth talking about. Back to the drawing board for Playstation3, Heavenly Sword teaches everyone a good lesson in game development. Great graphics and artwork does not make up for bad gameplay. My opinion? Heavenly Sword would have been a great CG animated movie. For a game, it falls short.

First things first. Spore has a release date. Maybe. Possibly. We think. We hope. Ohh heck, let's pray it's right! I found this out today from Rob over at RnD and, I was so happy to hear it. This game is going to be great! I do hope the March 8th, 2008 date will be it.

I was bored tonight and got a bug to Google Menuet and TheX . Wow...Google shows you so much. I found feeds I had no idea about and, someone thanking another person in their blog for "The X Episode 15 stuff". I was thinking "wow." Another person had some very kind words to say about me. I'll have to track him down and thank him even though it was written in July of this year. My favorite "hater" had some not so nice things to say about me. This person cracks me up. They use the same name every time and, have been following me since User Interface on WoW Radio just showing some hate. Well, you get that when you put your stuff out there. Not everyone will like it.

I heard a rumor that My Sims may be out as soon as this month. I need to confirm or find the truth behind this rumor. Just a moment...quitting writing and checking the website. Well then, according to the news section of the website this is true. My Sims is coming September 18th, 2007.

I'd better beat Metroid fast.

I was looking at TheX's web stats tonight. I always get a kick out of what searches have lead people to this site. Tonight though, I got a real kick out of the searches that lead people right to TheX. Here's the top 3:

I see a lot of more normal searches for "menuet the x" , "menuet and oxhorn"...I assume everyone wants to hear that show. I still have it, the show just is not archived. Maybe I can convince Oxhorn to do take 2 on the show now that his new machinima is out. (Go look! www.brandonmdennis.com )

I just thought the searches were pretty funny. This week coming up we'll have guest host Drew Koheler from Hardcore Christian Gamer Cast. It is a very funny show. Drew is a crazy guy so, listen in!

I do want to take just a moment to remember what today marks. You see, my brother served in the US Army and was in Iraq as a result of September 11, 2001. A good friend of our family is a 9/11 survivor. Hearing his story chills you to the bone. Whatever your political thoughts are doesn't matter. What does matter is, September 11th was a day that shook all of us and a day where so many people needlessly lost their lives. If you can remember, say a prayer today for the families of the people who were lost on 9/11 and a prayer for the soldiers still in Iraq. Thank God, my brother is now home unharmed but, so many men and women are still there protecting freedom. Thank all of you for being there.

(Remember, these men and women joined the service not knowing what would happen. You may not support what is happening but at least support the soldiers.)

This weekend, I was on another 'cast called "Hardcore Christian Gamer Cast" . I had a ton of fun and you won't want to miss this. I took one for the team for sure, I got some flak for not being an Xbox fan and, got a bit of fun poked at me for being one of those "ever elusive female gamers" ...I believe they pronounced me a 13-year-old boy so people wouldn't actually think women play games. haha! If you are getting errors downloading the new show, then it is because of a DNS server issue Liberated Syndication is having. I use Libsyn to host all my casts. Libsyn fixed the problem but some caches can take up to 24 hours to get it fixed. Sorry about that everyone. But..it's not so bad..you will just have the show closer to the weekend as you expected! :)

Alright everyone, there is a possibility The Grind won't be on TheX this weekend. There's a few reasons for that. Life happens sometimes. Drewbie had some issues due to a bad thunderstorm the day we were supposed to record. We tried to reschedule but I ended up getting sick, Drewbie isn't well either and Macheath's schedule is pretty tight this week.

I'll keep everyone posted on what's going on but, don't worry. Even if we don't do it this weekend, we'll do it at a later date.

Update: The Grind show will be postponed. It just wasn't going to happen. Too many issues sprang up this week. There will be a guest host though...so be happy over that :D We'll be rescheduling once things calm down for Drewbie, Macheath and, I.

After doing some thinking, I decided to take the Ebay auction down. It was one thing when I split the money with an organization but it's another when The X is all on it's own. I'd rather save the items I have and give them out to listeners during contests, etc.

I'd also like to see people donate to The X because they want to...not because I am giving an incentive, etc.

First off, I'd like to apologize to all of you. I know many of you are curious to the front page post on WcRadio's website. It's terribly unfortunate that TotalBiscuit saw fit to post something like that on the front page of the website for all to see.I'm very sorry any of you had to read something so unprofessional and so rude. Apparently, TotalBiscuit made a comment on-air about the situation bringing my own personal life into it. I'll appreciate it if you all would disregard that comment. TotalBiscuit has never been let into my personal life and, his comments were very out of line. This is not a mud-slinging contest.

There's always two sides to every coin and, yes there was a disagreement. One of many that has gone on for the past 6 months. The events of last night were pretty simple; the straw that broke the camel's back. I left WoW Radio on my own accord, other people left as well. They have their reasons for going and they can speak for themselves. There are multiple reasons why I left. Some good, some bad. I will not air them on a public forum.

The X will continue on it's own...temporarily located here until the website is completed. I've had some new opportunities I can not possibly pass up and, that's ufortunately taken me from WoW Radio. I still wish WoW Radio and everyone there the best of luck. I'll still continue to be a listener of some of the shows (Maxspeed and O&H FTW!). And, I'll still continue to keep in touch with the friends I've made.

Edit: I just received this from MacHarborGuy and was asked to post it. I will note these are Mac's words and not my own. But, he felt that he needed a public platform to voice his own opinion and how he felt.

"I am fed up with management, and the decisions they made. The rash calls of judgement they made. They looked at themselves as "dictators" and when staff complained, they put on a facade of how things were fixed but, continued preferential treatment to those that were close to them. The station as a whole..the major problem with it is, it blasts the very community it "attempts" to befriend. Why should Blizzard Ent look at a station when the owner is the host of a show that spews negativity of their own game all the time? Yes, they can be positive but also WoW Radio in the end is a fansite.

I enjoyed working with WoW Radio and with the hosts and enjoyed entertaining every single one of it's listeners. However, the managerial aspect of the station I equate to a spoiled child that gets angry when things don't go their way. It is my opinion things were not going in a positive direction for the station and the community as a whole. Because of this, my direction now is away from WoW Radio.

Since I quit, I've been marked as a "terrorist" for what? For protecting my copyright and ownership of my legal design that I spent four months working on? I have been marked as a "terrorist" for what? For exercising my right as the copyright holder and if the site is not taken down in a timely manner I will be taking this to my lawyer to go through the legal system. It is my belief that WoW Radio and the "managers" therein should watch themselves when throwing around phrases like "terrorism" and that they also watch themselves when doing this in a public forum. Those being the WoW Radio main page, the WoW Radio forums and even on live internet radio.

I am part of the community. Are you?

I am a woman. I embrace the fact I am a woman. I enjoy going to the spa and getting facials and massages. I do my nails and I complain about my skin if I get a blemish. I take care of myself and, take dance classes to keep fit. Watching sappy movies can make me cry. Chocolate is always a good thing to have. I am a sap for Disney movies and I still dream of "Prince Charming".

I have a life. I have a great job that I love. I go out and enjoy myself. I like to hang out at Starbucks and talk for a few hours with friends. I go to art galleries and museum for fun. I'll sit at home with junk food and veg out watching movies. I like cartoons I watched when I was a kid like Rainbow Brite and Jem and the Holograms. I am obsessed with Mermaids.

I like video games. I have been a long-time Nintendo fan and, I own a Wii. I have a Playstation 2 and I love Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy X. I have an Xbox and, my favorite game ever on the Xbox is Fable. World of Warcraft is my "drug of choice". I have been playing online games since 1998. Command and Conquer: Red Alert is still my favorite RTS. Starcraft comes in a close second.

I was an avid player of Magic: The Gathering, I had a white and blue deck and I got really good at the game. I always lost against my ex-boyfriend's black deck and his best friend's "deck of doom". I LARP'ed for a long while. I ran a Sabbat LARP in South Florida and played a Camarilla LARP on the UM campus. My favorite game type is RPG's. I've played text based MUDs, tabletop, MMORPGs, and LARP.

My passion does not lie with gaming. It lies in music. I've been a singer since I was young and, my first public performance was when I was 6 years old at a church Christmas program. I have been the lead singer of a local rock band, involved with the music industry since I was 17 and, a huge supporter of indie artists. I have done acting for indie films and, I have had a hobby of voice acting for a few years.

What does this make me? A "gamer girl"? A "geek"? A "nerd"? A "dork"? I've been called all of the above and, I disagree with each one. I am who I am. When did I ever need a label to define me? I am who God created me to be. Period.

I've read many blog posts, news reviews, and articles about women who game. I've heard podcasts and "netcasts" talking about women in gaming. All of them take opposite sides.

On one hand, there is the push of "we are women and gamers! Look at us rawr! We are sexy!" They take pictures of themselves with Nintendo controllers covering their private parts and, men drool. Or, they look like a porn star and take shots of themselves in pigtails wearing a Star Trek uniform.

On the other hand, there is the side of "Those girls suck! They are bringing us down! We hate other girls! We're cool and foul-mouthed and will write angry things in our blogs to show how angry and guy-like we are!" Even there, they fail. They still pull in the label and stereotype that they preach against. However, they have now created another stereotype. The "hardcore girl gamer who can hang with the boys".

And, where exactly do I fall in that category? I do not. When did we become so segregated? When did the gaming community become a separation of sexes and, now division within the gender itself? And, when did people care so much?

We are a community. We have come together using this amazing thing called the internet. All of us have become a large community of gamers, geeks, nerds, and dorks. And, none of us completely fit into that category. You may want to say "Menuet, you host an internet radio show about gaming, of course you would say this." That doesn't take away the fact I still see us as nothing but a community.

The stereotypes and labels given to the "girls" and, the stereotypes and labels given to the "guys" are all being broken. Within WoW Radio itself, I have seen every walk of life and type of person come through. Within our community, I see people from all different countries. They are all different ages, have different jobs and family lives. They all have different hobbies. I see the same in other communities I am involved in. However, one thing brings us together. One thing makes us a community. Gaming, tech, and straight up "geeking".

We are all different. We are all the same. We are not separated by anything but the stereotypes that exist in our own mind. We are not just women. We are not just men. We are a community.

We jumped topics faster than old episodes of User Interface. Two people with some pretty strong opinions on one show make for a great conversation. We went over plenty of video gaming goodness, talked about the World of Warcraft in a very different light, discussed movies made from comic books. We also had a conversation on how being on the internet can effect someone's life off of the computer. Plus, a super special LIVE performance of The Anti-Elf Anthem!
